The core of my work has always been about drawing and painting. For me, drawing is foundational to visual thinking. It permeates everything I do. I am mainly inspired by Realism and by art itself—the world of American and European art.

Learning to see was my first lesson, guided by artists within my parents’ circle of friends. My art studies have taken place at the Philadelphia College of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Indiana University.

Drawing gives me the kind of realism that I want. Even though I’m a traditional realist, I explore the abstract potential of art as the dynamic force that makes a work come alive. The subject itself is like an armature for my interior space, not only what I’m feeling but what’s going on in my life in time.

My formal drawings focus on portraits. Seeing another person through drawing is both a struggle and a deep pleasure. Sometimes I work on drawing a sympathetic likeness and other times I focus on expressing a narrative role.

I love the contemplative meditative experience of being in solitude while painting still life. I had a great run selling flower paintings in galleries in Santa Fe and New York, but at a certain point I got “flowered out.” So I decided to collect marionettes and set up still life with them to explore narratives. I sold all of them to a couple who had a private museum in California.

Recently, I had major surgery on my left hand. I had a long period of wearing a cast and had to stop painting in oils. I could, however, work in watercolor.

I fell in love with the alchemy between color, water, and paper. I feel like I’m painting with liquid stained glass. A whole new world is opening up in my studio, mostly by painting the landscape of New Mexico where I live.

Galleries are so caught up in the brand. It can be frustrating to get pegged in a narrow band when there is so much to explore and try. I am thrilled to have a feature showing my full range of subjects and media.
