My grandmother painted landscapes. The old farmhouse always smelled of woodsmoke and oil paints. Her gardens were beautiful, and the handwoven wall-to-wall rug she made for their living room was the talk of the community. So, at age 13 when I started drawing detailed images of birds, my mother reflected that I had many relatives who were artists. I came by the talent naturally.

Talent, however, is not a guarantee that one will become successful in the art world. I considered art a pastime activity. In college, I turned my attention to becoming a graphic designer, managing to slip only a few fine art courses into my formal education.

Years working in graphic design fostered the feeling that I needed a change. I gave myself permission to explore. I smeared oils, acrylics, and watercolors, sculpted clay, wove creative projects, and nurtured a garden or two. Along the way, watercolor really captured my focus. I was drawn to the unique glow, the ease of use, and the challenges the transparent medium provides.

“Lauren’s Tulips” watercolor, 9″ x 12″

I was inspired by the expressive work of John Singer Sargent, and landscapes by Winslow Homer and Andrew Wyeth. However, on July 4th, 2008, I met a painter (whose name I sadly don’t remember) who provided the final push towards watercolors.

A group of painters were painting live, and one particularly caught my attention. He was painting an image of a group of marbles, and they were bright and colorful, almost photographic in detail. I asked him how he was achieving such spectacular color with watercolor; my own paintings always seemed washed out. “You need better paint!”  he told me. And he was right!

Years experimenting with watercolors followed that unidentified painter’s suggestion. Along the way, I have had some revelations. For me, color combinations are a key ingredient, values are the basis for great forms, and composition can pull the viewer’s eye. I also came to the realization that I enjoy a little humor in my work and sometimes add elements from my imagination.

I have also discovered that while the principles of art can be taught, the inspiration comes from the artist, and as a result, few people paint when they are empty. I’ve also found I enjoy introducing people to the fun, relaxing, and challenging medium of watercolor through teaching. Teaching has returned the favor and improved my own work.

I have continued to paint in oils and acrylics as the project might dictate. Large paintings or murals intended to be displayed outdoors in particularly are not very conducive to watercolors! There have been many rabbit trails along my path: becoming an architect for my own home and studio, helping people with interior design solutions, being my own contractor (that was a long rabbit trail)! But now, at last, I have a home studio where I can teach and continue my pursuit of watercolor.

I do not believe I will ever “master” watercolors. There is always something new to learn! Perhaps that is the most enduring part of the allure.
