The twelfth edition of CONTEMPORARY VENICE analyzes the relationship between body and space, and the hybridization between identities and cultural/physical/social/urban settings in contemporary times, through two main sections: MIXING IDENTITIES and FUTURE LANDSCAPES.

MIXING IDENTITIES analyzes the hidden parts of our identities, through an immersive experience inside the fascinating universe of the complex labyrinths of our consciousness. The human body is a changing system that connects us with other bodies and spaces to perceive the surrounding reality; a strong communication system with its own language and infinite ways of expression.

FUTURE LANDSCAPES are abstract, infinite and conceptual, associated with a sense of freedom and infinite extension. Primarily experienced with the mind, spaces redefine their limits and borders, transforming surfaces into an open flow of pure ideas. This section focuses on the concept of the borders and the structures between body, mind and soul, the human identity and the city, the space and the ground.

When one takes their initial steps into Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, spectators become immersed in a realm full of colors and creativity. Guests are immediately caught up in Paul Scott Malone’s artworks, whose abstraction and fluidity hypnotize the viewer. He makes people question their own definition of borders: the use of a larger format conveys inside the painting, making them travel with their minds, through the lines and the colors. As the “Future Landscapes” theme remarks, we first experience limits with our mind, rather than the body.

Catherine Désirée amazed the public with her performance during the opening event, where she connected with them through a process involving literature, music, and theatre. And that was not it: she contributed to the exhibition by including six photographs from the series “écritures” and her short film “L’Insoupçonnable” to match the performance, making her the definition of a multimedia artist. The photographs depict a darker atmosphere and play with the perception of space, and as we see them, they make us wonder what is real, and what is an artifice.

Contemporary Venice explores different media and realities, as well as different experiences of the artists, in order to create a microcosmos where people can share their vision and find a new space. The French artist Nathalie Estienne‘s experience is transposed in her works characterized by the juxtaposition of materials of different natures: they send the audience immediately to the past, as they are surrounded by this magical aura that gives a sense of nostalgic feeling.

Aleksander “Pelles” Politanski embodies the “Mixing Identities” theme by presenting the intricate labyrinth of the human mind in art form. He begins his journey as a graphic designer and illustrator, giving him a unique perspective that is reflected in his canvases: they are the result of experiments with materials and techniques, but also of self-discovery as an artist.

The exhibition is an opportunity for artists to give their interpretation of the inter-defined relations that we as individuals experience between ourselves and our surroundings. Pam Harris’ fine lines and minimalistic approach focus on the relation between space and body: they project the viewer in a liminal space, in a sort of transition where despite the sharp lines and geometries, the feeling is of a transitional state of mind and a disoriented body surmounted by these limits. Her work is to represent humanity’s innate connection to the Earth, and mutual inter-dependency with the greater universe.

OUR LOCATION

Palazzoalbrizzicapello 001 1

Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello is one of the most known palaces of the Renaissance in Venice. It is a historical building dating back to the 16th century, and it has been owned by several noble Venetian families, as demonstrated by the frescoed ceilings, the artistic stuccos and the fine furniture that enriches its rooms. The Palace welcomes visitors with its beautiful private garden on the ground floor, and then it gathers the guests in its large first-floor salons, in which past and present dialogue together. The restored Old Masters’ frescoes and the contemporary art masterpieces that are periodically shown in the exhibitions hosted here, make Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello the perfect location for the balance between old and new, between ancient environment and contemporary art, architecture and design.

Today the building is managed by ACIT Venice – the Italian-German Cultural Association – which is considered one of the most important intercultural associations in Europe. Thanks to the ACIT unceasing cultural activity, Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello has nowadays frequent collaborations with the Goethe Institute and with other local and international institutions, maintaining its ancient reputation. Because of these relations, it presents a huge program of memorable art exhibitions, conferences, congresses and concerts. Among the last institutional exhibitions, is its participation in the 58th Venice Biennale with the Guatemala pavilion, the Dominican Republic pavilion and the Grenada pavilion. ITSLIQUID Group already had the pleasure to hold some festivals and exhibitions in Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, such as MORPHOS Festival and FUTURE IDENTITIES Festival, both in 2014.
