A selection of work by Tokyo-based photographer Osamu Yokonami (previously featured here). Working primarily with a film camera, Yokonami has been a freelance photographer for 28 years. He got his start in fashion and advertising work, but eventually pivoted toward work that felt more aligned with his personal vision. He has since published seven books and worked on many other projects over the years.
In his “Assembly” series, Yokonami explores themes of community, belonging, individuality, and the ephemeral nature of life. Capturing his subjects in homogeneous groups, he creates a sense of a collective entity, finding strength and beauty in the contrast between the humans and surrounding landscape — “like a piece of stratum which was highlighted.”
