Artist Spotlight: Claire Cansick

A selection of work by artist Claire Cansick (previously featured here). While we previously highlighted Cansick’s collection of North Sea images, this post includes markedly different kind of landscapes. Cansick started delving into the “darker, ferocious, reactive side of nature” in 2018:

“I began to collect reportage images from the news. This screenshot folder peppered with photos of my tv drew me in and echoed an encounter with a tornado a few years before. The subject overtook my work in 2022 when I decided to collect and paint as many reportage images as I could over the course of a year, of which these are some. The source material inspiring each work was quickly discarded allowing my instinct and the paint take over, brushwork informing brushwork, colour responding to its adjacent. The same recessive palette of four colours was used throughout all 46 works of the series.”
