Prado marks Queen Christina of Sweden’s 400th anniversary with cultural program

The Museo Nacional del Prado and the Embassy of Sweden in Madrid are marking the 400th anniversary of the birth of Queen Christina of Sweden with a wide-ranging program of exhibitions, concerts, talks, dance, educational activities and events exploring the queen’s enduring connections with art, science and intellectual freedom. Running from October through December 2026, the program takes inspiration from Christina herself, a monarch remembered for defying convention and pursuing culture, learning and personal independence with unusual intensity for her time. The Prado is using the anniversary not only to revisit her historical legacy, but also to connect her interests with contemporary questions surrounding identity, women in science, creativity and cultural exchange.
