My name is Ramona Marquez-Ramraj and I am from Venezuela in South America. Living in a big family, where everyone had their own dreams (or no dreams at all) I considered myself the odd one. I was the one who loved reading, drawing and solitary places.

Abstract painting of broken glass

“Broken Glass 1″ acrylic on canvas, 31.5″ x 23.5”

As a child going to the supermarket with my mother, I saw a lovely, wonderful, colourful little pack of crayons. I held it and its magic smell took me to a wonderful world, the world of art. By then I knew what I wanted to do when I grew upfill peoples’ homes with brightly coloured paintings.

But life is not what you plan to be sometimes. Going to college took me on a different path because art was not available in my small town. Then marriage came and two beautiful children. We moved to Canada and I became a full-time parent until my children finished school and moved on to their own lives.

That is the time when I wondered what to do. The little child holding the wonderful little pack of crayons talked to me… Paint! and paint I did!

Painting of a colorful zebra

“Colorful Zebra” acrylic on loose canvas, 31″ x 23″

I live in Ontario, Canada now with my husband and my dog. As a self-taught visual artist, I work with acrylic and mix media on canvas, paper and wood panels.

Patterned contemporary figurative painting

“Living with Bubbles” acrylic on canvas, 30″ x 24″

My expressionist art reflects the way I feel at the moment. I paint vibrant and energetic colours when my soul flies through the music of life. When I feel in a serene and calm place, I paint black and white lines with geometrical pieces, giving me a sense of control and definition.

Contemporary painting of a woman

“Feelings” acrylic on canvas, 31.5″ x 23.5″

In order to be more confident about my artwork, I enrolled in recreational centres that offered art classes with well-known and talented artists in the area.

Colorful painting of a group of women

“Serenity” acrylic on canvas, 20″ x 16″

My first submission to an art show where my artwork was recognized and awarded gave me the confidence that I am on the right path in my life. I create work that provides happiness and at the same time, a sense of calmness in people homes.
