As a kid, I collected weird, beautiful, or unusual found things. Even now, I usually have a cool rock or shell stuffed in my pocket. My windowsills are lined with these found treasures.

Now a mixed-media mosaic artist, my practice continues this lifelong curiosity. I work with glass, ceramics, and unconventional materials. These include rocks, wire, and shells, to build narratives that explore the deep, often invisible connections between humanity and the natural world.

Color profoundly shapes my emotional response to the world. I find myself easily distracted by the color of the light filtering through a forest canopy. I love how rain reveals the hidden vibrancy in dusty rocks. These aren’t just visual changes. They are moments of revelation that inspire my art.

My work is influenced by my 26 years in land management with The Nature Conservancy. As a Fire Manager and a certified Prescribed Fire Burn Boss, I intentionally engaged in the cycles of destruction and rebirth. My days were spent using prescribed fire to heal and restore the land.

“Words Matter” mixed media mosaic, 16″ x 20″

I witnessed firsthand how fire can transform a landscape from the clean black of a fresh burn to the neon green of new growth. This taught me that every story is a cycle, where every part is essential.

I am fascinated by indigenous mythologies that explore growth, natural cycles, and wisdom. These ancient patterns resonate with my own experiences. They inspire my approach to art, as I look for the parts of the greater story. There is a meditative quality in taking a broken ceramic plate or a scarred stone and finding a place for it in the larger picture.

Since retiring in 2024, art has become my next chapter. But my mission remains to foster a sense of belonging to the earth. Whether I’m mountain biking, hiking with my dogs, spending time with family, or piecing out my next artwork, I look for that interesting twist, that unusual color that tells a story.

I’m still that kid, distracted by the colors of nature. Now my curiosity moves me deeper into the beauty to be found in every part of the cycle.
