Living and working in the Clarence Valley region of New South Wales, Australia, artist Patrick Oates has been painting since before he can remember. Through his painting practice, he translates internal landscapes onto canvas, exploring themes of intergenerational trauma, queer identity, and thought-provoking escapism. His current work takes an investigative approach into the identity of family figures he’s never met and places he’s never been, mining the terrain of family folklore and developing a family portrait full of strangers that he is getting to know through the process of painting them.
