Artist Spotlight: Madeleine Tonzi

A selection of work examining the relationship between memory, place, and the environment by Los Angeles-based artist Madeleine Tonzi. Born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Tonzi draws on her personal memories and experiences to reflect on our ever-changing landscapes and the impact of climate change. A common thread throughout her work is the concept of “solastalgia”  — a term coined by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht to describe the emotional and existential distress caused by environmental change.

Sourced from memory, and mediated by the distortion of those memories over time, Tonzi’s imagery involves both organic and architectural forms, hard edges and soft colour pallets. These subtle tensions invite the viewer to consider their own contradictory relationship to their environment and current climate crisis. Check out more of Tonzi’s work below!
