MSCHF Turns Lexus Cars Into Impossible Sculptures in New York

At first glance, MSCHF’s latest cars look like digital images caught mid-glitch. They are physical sculptures. For MOTOMORPHOSIS, the Brooklyn collective made two distorted doubles of Lexus vehicles and placed them beside the familiar production models at Chelsea Industrial in New York.

A loop and a twist

Circle Car pulls the shape of an electric Lexus RZ 450e into a nose-to-tail loop. Twisted Car takes the plug-in hybrid RX 450h+ through a long spiral, while keeping enough of its bodywork for the vehicle to remain recognisable. The ordinary cars stood alongside the new works, giving visitors a direct comparison between a machine designed to travel and an object made to suggest movement.

MSCHF calls the pieces “Form Cars” rather than concept cars. Their stretched and twisted bodies borrow a visual language from animation, where a fleeting distortion can make speed legible. Fixed in sculpture, that passing instant becomes something viewers can walk around.

Art beyond a conventional gallery

Lexus commissioned the two works for a three-day public exhibition during New York’s Armory Week. MOTOMORPHOSIS ran from September 24 to 26, 2026, at Chelsea Industrial. The presentation made the city’s art week a setting for a question about form and motion, rather than a preview of future vehicle designs.

Both works keep the badges, windows and familiar body details that make them legible as cars. That recognition is what makes their impossible shapes compelling: the viewer knows what each object should do, even while looking at a version that can only stand still.
