Vesod has completed a new mural in Rogliano, Calabria, directly beneath the town’s Duomo of San Pietro. The work takes as its subject the martyrdom of Saint Peter, depicted crucified upside down.
Rather than treating the religious image as a quotation from art history, Vesod folds the town into its structure. Gulìa Urbana describes Rogliano itself as composing the cross, while a dense red field constructs Saint Peter’s body through an image of rubies becoming flesh, light and sacrifice. The mural faces the Duomo, placing the painted scene in direct conversation with the church and the built landscape around it.
The subject inevitably recalls the long visual history of Saint Peter’s crucifixion, including Caravaggio’s celebrated interpretation. Here, however, the imagery is rooted in the immediate setting: the town’s outline becomes a formal and symbolic element of the composition, connecting the saint’s martyrdom to the particular architecture and geography of Rogliano.
The work was made for Gulìa Urbana 2026, the street-art project held across Rogliano and nearby Marzi from September 1 to 6. Vesod was among the artists invited for the programme, which marked the project’s fifteenth year. The mural was financed through Calabria Region resources under the POC 2014/2020 programme for tourism and cultural promotion.
