Originally from Vancouver, artist Mackenzie Hyde is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. With a focus in painting, his work observes “frictions within city life, and the awkward adjustments in a rapidly evolving world.” Paying particular attention to color, he depicts spaces and scenes that juxtapose indoor and outdoor realms.
From last year’s duo exhibition, “The Good Life,” with artist Cha at Tchotchke Gallery, these paintings address the pressure Hyde has felt to make himself and his family proud through individual success in adulthood. He explores what “the good life” means to him, wondering: “Is it defined by working hard to acquire enough wealth in order to partake in whatever one’s heart desires or is it something less avaricious? Is it even possible to attain?”
