French artist Scaf has painted a new work for Southend City Jam 2026, the fifth edition of Southend-on-Sea’s annual street-art festival. The artist’s contribution is located at Alexandra Street Car Park, close to the city centre.
Scaf, who is based in Lorraine in northeastern France, has developed a practice around realism, comic-book imagery and anamorphic painting. His murals often use corners, changes of plane and the surrounding architecture to produce a three-dimensional illusion, with animals and pop-cultural figures recurring through his work. That approach brings a particular charge to the car-park setting, where the structure itself becomes part of the encounter with the painting.
Writing after the festival, Scaf described City Jam as “incredible” and offered thanks to Ster and Ekto, while acknowledging the other artists involved. His Southend appearance follows a long-running international mural practice rooted in graffiti, which he began in 2002.
City Jam took place from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August 2026 across Southend city centre and seafront. Organised by Southend-on-Sea City Council with local street-art advocates Steve Hart and Karl Sims, the event brings artists into the city to paint permanent walls, shopfronts, shutters and temporary structures. This year’s live programme has now concluded, though temporary festival walls remain in place until 13 September.
Scaf’s piece adds another distinct perspective-led intervention to the evolving collection of murals that City Jam has established across Southend. Visitors approaching Alexandra Street Car Park can find the work at SS1 1DA.
