“Haven” by Photographer Sem Langendijk

Amsterdam-based photographer Sem Langendijk explores the impacts of gentrification on marginalized communities in his recent photobook, “Haven.” Tracing his own experience growing up in the harbor area on the outskirts of a large city, Langendijk is drawn to scenes that evoke his memories of home. The images in “Haven” weave a fictional narrative, bringing together the environments of various port cities, and telling the story of a boy coming of age in a rapidly changing environment. Gradually reaching adulthood and his full potential, the boy finds himself within a capitalist system, “where the city is no longer a home for a diverse mix of people, but a place for generating revenue.”
