Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by the way a few marks or lines could describe thoughts or emotions more accurately than spoken words.
More than anything, I always enjoyed drawing and painting people. It allowed me to express emotions without verbalizing them. I also enjoyed the vast differences in shapes, sizes, proportions, and colors. I explored my visions and perceptions of the people that I viewed.
I started to experiment with colors that would accentuate the way I felt about these figures. Eventually, I brought these figurative influences into my landscape, animal and architectural drawings and paintings. There are human qualities in everything I paint.
My work captures the essence of what I see, think, and experience throughout my life. Through the use of vivid colors and dynamic strokes and lines, I organize the chaos. The images are drawn, sculpted and illuminated with heavy colorful brush strokes and marks.
With honesty and integrity, I attempt to capture the core of the human condition. I use acrylic paint because it allows me to immerse myself in the creative process with minimal interruption for dry time. I can quickly layer brush stroke upon brush stroke and remain in what I call the creative zone.
I also like to mix and set up all of my colors in advance, so the only thing I am concerned with is the next movement with the brush. Often, I incorporate random strokes or images from previous paintings into my pieces.
The combination of deliberate and random marks in my paintings mirror the sometimes casual chances or haphazard decisions that we all make in life. I believe it makes the artwork more authentic.
My subject matter is wide and varied. I paint landscapes, figures, architectural structures and animals. Although the subject matter may vary, they all carry a common thread throughout. All of the paintings capture a moment in time.
I am a scribe communicating through my art. My hope is that I am able to translate what I see, think, and feel with passionate lines, marks, strokes and colors.
