The 11th edition of ROME INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR represented a forum for the direct exchange of ideas and contacts between collectors, artists, photographers, designers and art professionals, and provided a unique opportunity for artists and exhibitors to present their works to an international audience of art professionals seeking to acquire, publish and encourage the best talents in contemporary art. The exhibition analysed the body-space relationship and the hybridization between identities and cultural/physical/social/urban contexts in contemporary times, through two main sections: MIXING IDENTITIES and FUTURE LANDSCAPES.

MIXING IDENTITIES analyzed the hidden parts of our identities and their infinite modes of expression, through an immersive experience in the fascinating universe of the labyrinths of our consciousness. While FUTURE LANDSCAPES focused primarily on the concept of boundaries and structures between body, mind and soul, human identity and the city, space and ground, transforming surfaces into an open flow of pure ideas.

The concept of Mixing Identities is vividly brought to life by artists like Alfredo Belli, whose surrealist paintings reflect on the complexities of existence and the enigmatic beauty of nature; with their dreamlike quality, mirrored the exhibition’s focus on the subconscious, offering a visual representation of the intricate layers of reality that lie beneath the surface. Meanwhile, Future Landscapes extended the exploration to the boundaries and structures that define our interaction with the world. József Szűr-Szabó’s works captured this theme by blending the physical and cultural landscapes of iconic cities with human identity. His art not only celebrated the historical and architectural essence of the two Italian cities but also connected these spaces with the broader human experience, illustrating how environments are shaped by the people who inhabit them.

Crocifissa Kristina Grillo’s abstract expressionism further deepened the exhibition’s investigation into identity and space: her art, heavily influenced by her experiences in Florence, explored the balance between emotion and form, echoing the fair’s themes of personal and artistic expression. Grillo’s use of color and dimension created a visceral connection with the viewer, embodying the transformative potential of art as it interacts with the mind and soul. The narrative thread continued with Cristina Galardini’s “Diario di una Stupida”, a monologue that addressed the societal structures that confine personal identity, particularly for women; this work highlighted the struggle for self-expression within the rigid boundaries of traditional marriage, aligning with Future Landscapes’ focus on the constraints between body, mind, and societal expectations. Galardini’s poignant storytelling underscored the shift toward a more liberated and self-assured female identity, challenging the conventions that have long dictated women’s roles. Joana Bastos’ “I Am Art” laboratory is an interactive culmination of the exhibition’s topic, allowing observers to directly engage with the concepts of identity and self-expression. By using their bodies as canvases, participants broke free from societal beauty standards, creating art that was deeply personal and reflective of their true selves, transforming individual expression into a tangible, celebratory act of creativity.
