Brandon Sadler, who works as Rising Red Lotus, has painted “As Above, So Below” across the side walls and ceiling of the Virginia Avenue bridge underpass on Atlanta’s Eastside Trail. Rather than treating the tunnel walls as separate surfaces, the mural carries its imagery overhead, surrounding people as they pass through. (beltline.org)
The Atlanta BeltLine describes a scene that moves between the ceiling and the walls. K’un, guardian of the Lotus Garden, appears above as a phoenix and below in human form, offering a lotus to visitors entering the passage. Across the tunnel, koi gather beneath the Falls of Eternity. These figures give the underpass a narrative that unfolds on foot, from one side of the trail to the other. (beltline.org)
According to the BeltLine, the palette draws on ceiling paintings in Korean Buddhist temples. The title invokes the relationship between spiritual and material worlds: the idea that what exists within us is reflected in the world around us, and vice versa. The painted ceiling makes that exchange part of the physical experience of walking beneath the bridge. (beltline.org)
Dated 2026, the mural is Sadler’s third on the Eastside Trail. The BeltLine says he first painted at this site in 2012. “As Above, So Below” returns him to a familiar stretch of the trail while giving the entire passage a new painted landscape. (beltline.org)
