A selection of recent work by Winnipeg-based artist Karel Funk (previously featured here). Over the past several decades, Funk has dedicated himself to exploring the potential of figurative portraits. His process is meticulous, using a glazing technique of very thin layers, often taking months to complete one painting.
“I want my paintings to be as complex and full of intensity as possible, but at the same time simplified and distilled to their purest essence,” explains Funk. “With this in mind, I explore and emphasize form, texture, references to the contemporary and a reverence for the past. I’m constantly pushing the boundaries on how these investigations can be organized and realized in one painting.”
